While we love our pets, we also love it when our heating & air system is operating at top performance! Below are 5 things you can do as a pet owner to ensure your system is running smoothly.
1. Check the Filter
Owning pets can add large amounts of dander as well as particles from outdoors like dirt, dust, and pollen to your home’s air. As these circulate through your heating and air system, the filter accumulates quite a build up. This is why we recommend changing your filters every 60-90 days if you own at least one pet. The more pets you have in your home – the more frequently you will want to check on your filter.
2. Keep Your Home Clean
You can do wonders for your heating and air system by vacuuming and dusting on a regular basis. This will eliminate a lot of these particles before they reach your system. Your home will also benefit from your animals staying well groomed. This can be achieved by giving your dog regular baths and brushing their fur every couple of days to reduce shedding.
3. Clean Your Ducts
When any of the above mentioned dust, dirt, pollen, and pet dander particles make it through your air filter, they start to build up in your ducts. You can hire companies to clean these out on a yearly basis or you can opt to do it yourself. If you do decide to clean your own ducts, we suggest wearing a protective mask to protect yourself from breathing in the dirty air. To read more about cleaning your own vents and ducts, click here.
4. Protect Your Outdoor Unit
If you have not done this yet, you may want to consider adding this to your spring time to do list. Protecting your unit with a DIY fence like the one pictured below can make a big difference. Not only does it protect your unit from animals clawing at the it or ‘marking’ it – which can lead to corrosion and damage, but it also protects the unit from grass and debris. If you are not up for the challenge of building a structure like this, no worries – they are sold at places like Home Depot.
