Tis’ the season for HVAC mishaps! From your in-laws breaking your thermostat to your nephews breaking your minisplit remote. Your HVAC unit might go through some wear and tear this holiday season. But fear not! We have some helpful tips to protect your unit and how you can avoid any HVAC-related disasters:
Monitor Your Thermostat
Fact: when you have guests staying at your home throughout the holiday season, there’s a chance that they might be tampering with your thermostat. If you’re looking to save money on your heating bill, then it’s important to monitor the temperature. OR even tape the control panel door shut on your device.
Our staff’s recommendation, buy a smart thermostat and lock it with a password. That’s right, on today’s smart thermostat’s you can password protect your comfort! Our favorite for this Holiday Season is the EcoBee4.
The reason is this; not all of your guests will appreciate the temperature and may try to raise the heat higher than it has to be. If you feel that this may be an ongoing issue in your home, just have a talk with your guests beforehand. Let them know that you’ll adjust the temperature if needed.
Don’t Decorate Your Vents
During the holiday season, it’s very tempting to block the vents of your HVAC unit with a fun, festive decoration. Although that might amp up your holiday display, it can be quite detrimental to your unit’s well-being. Think of vents as the nose and mouth of the human body. If those essential parts are blocked, then the flow of oxygen will be ceased; same applies to your unit. If you block the vents, then it will be impossible for it to function properly. This will ultimately lead to a malfunction. When you’re decorating the walls of your home, keep all decorations away from vents and your thermostat. It will still maintain that festive look you’re going for!
