What Other Problems Can Leaky Plumbing Cause Besides Mold?

Home » News and Handy Tips

January 6, 2021 by Mallory Jinks » Under Plumbing

It’s a known fact that if water is left standing for long enough, there is a risk of mold starting. Undetectable leaks are a key cause of moisture build up behind walls, ceilings, and even flooring. These damp conditions can eventually lead to mold or mildew and the break down of solid materials – reeking havoc on your health and home. Click here to learn more about mold types and their effect on your health from the EPA.

Examples of Mold on Different Surfaces

Structural Damage

Many of the pipes that run throughout your home are located above the ceiling and underneath the floor boards. Any of the leaking water resulting from leaks in these pipes can cause your home’s framing to warp and eventually rot and collapse. The beginning stages of this may appear as bumps on your ceiling or floor and dark gray and yellow stains on your walls. Even worse, if the leak is upstairs of a multi-story home, there is a risk of furniture falling through the ceiling as the framing and drywall become weaker. If you suspect you have a leak in your home, call a professional today.

High Water Bills

Another costly expense resulting from leaks in your home’s plumbing is your water bill. The cost of a leak is dependent on several variables including the size of the leak, how long the leak has existed, and the water pressure. Below is a chart that uses the standard household’s water pressure, usage, and costs to determine the average leak costs per month, based on the size of the leak. If you suspect you have a leak, click here to read our tips and tricks to detect a leak in your home.
